It’s important to have a space to kick back and relax. Especially these days when more and more of us are struggling with our mental health.
We live in a world where it’s difficult to switch off. And as a result more people are facing challenges such as anxiety, depression and addiction. Of course, seeking professional help is a must in such instances, but what you’ll find in such settings across the UK is that guidance revolves around finding healthy ways to cope, whether that be going through alcohol addiction recovery in Essex, mental health counselling in Glasgow, or drug rehab in any other part of the country.
It’s all about finding those healthy coping mechanisms and actually often that can start at home. If you’re lucky enough to have a spare room, transforming it into a relaxing space can be revolutionary for your mental health, whether you’re severly struggling or you just want to keep on top of it, and there are many ways you can utilise it to suit your needs.
There are so many options for turning your spare room into a relaxing space, and here are five great ideas for doing so…
Yoga studio

We’re sure you’ve heard that yoga is great at maintaining positive mental health and dedicating a space to it is becoming more and more common across the UK. It’s easy to set up a yoga space and a minimalistic approach is always advised.
Calming colours should be used on the walls while decluttering is the first port of call. Adding in a few house plants can bring cleaner air, as well as a touch of nature to the space, while all you really need is a yoga mat and any accessories to partake in the activity itself.
Library
If reading is more your thing to relax, then how about committing to a library? Libraries aren’t just for stately homes, you can create one in a space no matter how big or small. Again, you don’t want it to be too cluttered so don’t go mad, but shelving in key areas is important, while you want to make the most of the natural light during the day.
By night, ensure you can create a cosy space, with soft lighting while the key aspect of any library is somewhere comfortable to sit. While you might think the books are the focal point, actually a nice armchair or sofa is the most important feature to ensure you really get lost in your reading.
Studio
For the more creative amongst us, an art studio can be just what you need to express your emotions after a long and stressful day. Whether you like to paint, draw, collage or even enjoy hobbies like pottery, having a dedicated space to do it can feel like a real outlet.
Utilise shelving, tables and screens to set up everything you need, and make sure you also have a space to display your work. Keeping things organised can be helpful, while you don’t want it too pristine that you can’t make a little bit of a mess.
Cinema room
Sometimes escaping into a different world can be exactly what you need and, like a library, cinema rooms don’t need to be limited to big homes. You could even set up a cinema in a box room!
Use the space you do have wisely, and consider screen size when you do so. You don’t want to be completely blown away by it. Darkening the walls is important, while you may want to add some movie memorabilia or artwork for decor. Finally, comfy seating. If you’re going to be spending hours here, then armchairs, sofas or even bean bags are perfect for this.
Home gym
Finally, if exercise is what you need to switch off, then home gyms could be the answer. Naturally, what you include within it is dependent on the size of the room. For example, don’t put a treadmill in a small room unless all you like to do is run.
Think about the type of exercises you like to do and how you can make it work in the space. You don’t want the room to be too full, as it will make your workouts too cramped, so dedicated areas to certain equipment and exercises is a must.
Decor wise, think inspirational, whether it be iconic sporting moments or phrases and words of encouragement that will keep you going.
